What could possibly be better than nice weather, an open beautiful space where the trails are free and clear to run and a family that is willing to play and laugh together?!

Absolutely nothing could be better in my book!

Meet my amazing friend Meg, who is a mother to two wild and fishing loving boys and one sweet and kind not to mention gorgeous girl!  She is a wife, a mother and a small business owner!  She has so many roles and is so many things to so many people but to her family she is the glue to keeps them together!

She is patient and kind and she if fun!

She has an amazing story, but it’s one I will let her tell you in her own words on another day!  This day is all about her family!

We met at one of my favorite spots where the light just hits everything right (and a little differently depending on where you decide to run and land!)  It’s great for the littles to run wild and free which is exactly what her 3 year old wanted to do!  Her littlest and Linc are the exact same age and are very much alike!

We spent our time laughing about who has the worst breath in the morning and who sleeps in the latest!  We talked about our most favorite memories of each family member and we even made some silly faces (I think mom had the best one, not going to lie!!!)

As we were walking around, we had a little run in with the mud!~  It was all fun and games until someone landed a full knee/leg into the muddy bog!

At first there was a panic but Meg is like me!  This is where we are in our lives.  We live and breathe muddy days with our boys and once we get to playing things like this just happen.  It doesn’t matter if we are in our nice clothes or our dirtiest of play clothes… play and magic will just FIND US no matter where we are if we are doing life the right way!  So we should always just embrace the moment!  We embrace the mess and the simple joy that life will happen the way it is meant to and that it is not our version of perfect!

Meg laughed and said you know what… it’s OK!  In fact… I kind of like it better, I love it!  It’s true to who we really are!  Let’s keep going!

So we shot the rest of the family pictures with the muddy britches and truth be told that’s really when everyone’s personality really started to shine!

The muddy pictures are my favorite!  They resemble real life, true life with children who are active and love to play and run and be free.

This is one of my favorite sessions because of how we just loved the moment and took each second for wherever it took us!  We had no real plan and no real expectations and that is a wonderful thing!

Here are some of my favorites from our time together that night!  We just enjoyed each other’s company and playing in the mud and the light and the grass!

The best time is always the time we get to spend with one another… all together~

This shot above reminds me especially that it’s in those inbetween moments that we can often find beauty!  The times we weren’t aiming for perfection!

Those were “test shots”.  I hadn’t set my exposure or set my camera up correctly.  I was just trying to see merely what the light was doing before setting my camera to the proper settings.  What I found was that the accidental camera fire turned out to be some really beautiful portraits of Meg’s daughter!

Here I was just messing around, B wasn’t even paying attention and wham, these are my favorite portraits of the entire evening!

So for all my photographer friends out there, don’t automatically delete or toss out those seemingly meaningless “test” shots.  You just never know what you might find when you aren’t aiming for perfection!

Sometimes it’s those in-between moments that are the most powerful.  I love living in the in-between!  It’s where I find the most beauty!

So this is a true story ya’ll…

Yesterday I knew I was going to spend the morning with my boys in our pj’s (holiday ones!!!) lounging around and resting from all the Thanksgiving festivities!  I knew that we would have a quiet day at home just playing together and being lazy (kind of/restful as you can with a toddler)  We all needed the weekend to re-coup!

I had sessions in the evening and I had sessions that I needed to spend some time uploading and working on so I worked out a pretty good schedule:  balance of good quality morning family time all together and then the boys would have some good quality one on one time since Tuck was heading to work this week!

When I sit down to process images, I like to have background noise.  Sometimes that noise is music and other times it’s a netflix show!  I have to admit that this past weekend I was on a Christmas movie of the Hallmark kind binge!  All those with me… and I know there are some, you know what I”m talking about!

So I grabbed some tea (a kind that my mom has made since childhood that only she can make and thank goodness she brought over in batches on Thanksgiving) set up my computer to netflix and set out to choose something while I culled and processed.  This is where it went downhill.  I chose probably the best and worst movie I could have ever picked!  I didn’t realize that I was choosing a movie that was going to effect me in a way that would leave me up through the middle of the night!  I didn’t realize that I was picking a true story!  I didn’t realize I was picking a movie that would leave me sobbing at my computer!  I didn’t realize I was choosing a movie that would rock me to my core and tap into my roots of the time when I worked at the children’s hospital.

I chose (and it’s on netflix if you want to watch) The Heart of Christmas.

The story is about a family and a little boy and I am not going into too many details because I would rather you find out for yourself and decide then and there if you want to watch it.

It is based around a mother’s blog and talks about truly cherishing every single moment!  She wants you to love every moment, and live (really live) in every moment that you have with your little ones because you never know what the future holds.

If that’s not telling right there…

What’s crazy to me is that I KNOW this!  I believe this with my whole heart!  I know from years of working in a children’s hospital that we should never ever take a single second for granted with our loved ones!

That’s why I believe with every beat of my heart so deeply that real is better than perfect because this “real”, our real moments… you just never know how many of them we will get!  And those moments… they are often the most cherished and the most often missed.

I sat last night thinking of how truly blessed I am!  Sometimes it’s easy for me especially to get caught up in all the hustle and the bustle and especially the stress ya’ll!  Oh the stress!

I am an anxious person and I am easily stressed!  I worry so much about things that I don’t need to!  I have soo much to be thankful for and so many opportunities to play and be silly and surround myself right now with so much magic!

In the movie the other mom who is reading this blog has also gotten lost in the needs and the wants of the “things!”  She has been working so hard to provide for her family that she has actually almost lost her family!  Her children and growing up in front of her eyes and she is soo busy making a living that she doesn’t even know her own children.

But the great news is that we can always find our way back to that playful magic and that appreciation!

We all get caught up!  This world is soo absolutely crazy these days and it takes a little bit of crazy ourselves and hustle and bustle in order to provide for our families and give them what they need.

But sometimes… we just need to take a moment/step back and really take a look at all that we DO have!  We need to cherish every single second and make the most of it!

This may sound silly and it may sound like a bunch of rambling but I tell you… you watch that movie and you will feel what I feel!

I now know that 365 project is more important to me more than ever!  It’s hard to remember to actually pick up that camera and find something to document for the day, but darn it, it needs to be done!

I want to capture as much of Linc as I can!

Tell me… how do you feel?!

GOOOD MORNING Friends! (With a big emphasis on the good!!)

I hope everyone had a wonderful (dry) weekend!  If you live near me in Virginia Beach, we had a wonderful Saturday but our Sunday was a bit of a wash out (a cold one too!)

Our little family of three spent the weekend feeling rather lazy!  We ran a few errands here and there, but mostly we just snuggled up together watching movies and building towers just to knock them down with our favorite dinosaurs.

I had two Holiday sessions and then I had a homecoming which truly rocked my heart to the core!

This is the season of thankfulness and good will towards men.  Somewhere along the way though, I feel like this notion gets a little lost…does anyone else feel that way?

Yesterday as I stood with my camera out in the rain and watched these incredible families who have sacrificed so much of themselves wait on their loved ones; I truly began to remember what a thankful heart feels like and what it means!

We are blessed with so many wonderful things.  These days now there are so many incredible inventions and technologies that it absolutely blows my mind.  It makes life so much easier, yet in some ways it also makes life more complicated and less “connected”.

We come in contact with so many amazing people every single day and often we don’t even take the time to see them!

Life is truly about connecting with people and sharing our stories.

This time of year when we truly embrace the spirit of these two months it allows us to come back together and remember this!  It helps warm our hearts and remind us that truly life is about kindness and human connection!

We all crave it and it’s powerful friends!

I have an extremely grateful heart today for my own family and for my friends that are so dear to me.  I have a grateful heart for all those that are reunited with their loved ones again and that they are able to share quality time with them, hopefully in the quiet!

I am grateful and in awe of all those that serve our country and for the sacrifices they (and their loved ones) make every single day.

I met an amazingly strong woman yesterday that is truly a hero that I will never ever forget!  She left a lasting imprint on my heart after she told me nonchalantly about this past deployment for her family.  She has a 3 year old just like me, she gave birth to a new son (whom her husband has yet to meet!).  She also moved her entire family to their next location and unpacked their house only to drive back for this homecoming welcome her husband home and then all drive back to a new house together where they could relax in peace!  If that’s not one strong, incredible woman who should be motivational speaking to other women, then I don’t know what is!

I am grateful for mother’s like her who have an incredible unconditional love for this country, for her family, and for her husband that keeps her going and thankful in the midst of everything!

I am thankful this morning for all of the incredible individuals that photography has brought into my life!  I have learned from them and I continue to grow as a person with each of their stories and lessons that have brought me!

I am thankful for all of you who take time out of your day and out of your lives to spend just a few moments reading this blog!  It means more to me than you could ever possibly imagine.

I am just so thankful that the opportunity is still there to connect with people one on one!  That we can drop our masks and that there is still a place where people are willing to be open, vulnerable and share their true selves!

Who are you thankful for today friends?  Who has left a lasting impression on your heart?

I challenge you today to reach out to ONE person!  To connect with someone that you are thankful for and share with them one TRUTH about yourself that maybe you have never shared before!  Drop your mask and really let down your guard!

Tis the seasons friends and the most valuable gift you could ever give someone… is the gift of true and real unconditional love and acceptance!
